Sete cardeais brasileiros estão na lista do Vaticano para participar do Conclave, que é a eleição que definirá o novo pontífice. Com a morte do papa Francisco, nesta segunda (21), o processo deve começar em até 20 dias.

Pelas regras da Igreja Católica, apenas cardeais com menos de 80 anos podem votar. Entre os oito cardeais brasileiros, sete atendem a esse critério. Confira a lista:

  • Sérgio da Rocha, Primaz do Brasil e arcebispo de Salvador, 65 anos.
  • Jaime Spengler, presidente da CNBB e arcebispo de Porto Alegre, 64 anos.
  • Odilo Scherer, arcebispo de São Paulo, 75 anos.
  • Orani Tempesta, arcebispo do Rio de Janeiro, 74 anos.
  • Paulo Cezar Costa, arcebispo de Brasília, 57 anos.
  • João Braz de Aviz, arcebispo emérito de Brasília, 77 anos.
  • Leonardo Ulrich Steiner, arcebispo de Manaus, 74 anos.
O único cardeal brasileiro que não poderá participar do Conclave é Raymundo Damasceno, arcebispo emérito de Aparecida, de 87 anos. Ainda assim, ele será convidado a integrar o Colégio dos Cardeais, que discutirá assuntos inadiáveis da Igreja até a escolha do novo papa.No total, segundo o Vaticano, 138 cardeais estão aptos a participar da votação. Leonardo Ulrich Steiner é o atual arcebispo de Manaus e tem 74 anos. Natural de Forquilhinha (SC), é considerado pelo Vaticano o primeiro cardeal da Amazônia.

Estudou Filosofia e Teologia no convento dos Franciscanos de Petrópolis e é bacharel em Filosofia e Pedagogia pela Faculdade Salesiana de Lorena. Também é doutor em Filosofia pela Pontifícia Universidade Antonianum, em Roma.

Polícia Militar prende em flagrante suspeito de homicídio em Cocalinho

Foi ordenado sacerdote em janeiro de 1978, em Forquilhinha. Após isso, por causa da formação em Pedagogia, atuou em vários projetos de educação. Entre 1999 e 2003, foi secretário-geral do Pontifício Ateneu Antoniano, em Roma. Ao voltar ao Brasil, foi nomeado vigário da Paróquia do Senhor Bom Jesus, em Curitiba.

Em fevereiro de 2005, foi nomeado bispo pelo Papa João Paulo II e assumiu a Prelazia de São Félix do Araguaia (MT). Em 2011, foi eleito secretário-geral da CNBB e, no mesmo ano, nomeado bispo auxiliar da Arquidiocese de Brasília pelo Papa Bento XVI.

Em 2019, tornou-se arcebispo de Manaus e, três anos depois, foi criado cardeal pelo Papa Francisco.
